Dr. Denise “Neesey” Nussbaum is an author, sociologist, designer, and community advocate who has spent her life exploring what makes us tick. She’s driven by a deep curiosity about the forces that shape our lives—from trauma and resilience to the difficult choices we make when we're pushed to our limits.
After earning her Ph.D. in Sociology in 1999, Denise spent more than two decades teaching at Mt. San Jacinto College in Southern California, where she also served as Department Chair. Over the years, she mentored hundreds of students, encouraging them to look closely at inequality, prejudice, and the long-lasting effects of trauma. These same themes now fuel both her storytelling and her community activism.
Her debut novel, The Ashes Know Her Name, blends the high-stakes tension of a global thriller with a deeply personal story of survival and identity. Drawing on her background in sociology, she creates complex, relatable characters facing real-world struggles.
Denise’s commitment to helping others also extends far beyond the page. In 2019, she founded Aloha Ranch to support unhoused and vulnerable families in West Maui. With over 40 years of experience working alongside marginalized communities, she brings empathy and practical insight to helping people rebuild their lives.
Ultimately, whether she is writing a novel or serving her community, Denise’s work is about understanding not just what happens to people, but how those experiences shape who they become.
